Be prepared for a pandemic
We have all heard about all of these terrible diseases that are killing people or making people very ill. the big one in the news lately has been the Ebola virus. I for one do not think you can truly prepare for something so serious as this but I do think there are a few things you can do prepare for a pandemic or if there is a quarantine.
A pandemic is defined as being an illness that covers a wide geographical area. a quarantine is defined as a period that a person or group of people are kept away from other because they have an illness or may have an illness and could be contagious.

First thing to remember is there is always a constant threat of a pandemic. there are new viruses and illnesses discovered every day, the best way to avoid this situation is to practice good hygiene. Wash your hands often with warm water and soap and dry them with disposable towels because cloth can carry bacteria. If you have a cold or cough please be considerate of other and cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue. If you have a fever please stay home. A fever is a sign that you are contagious.
Second thing to do is be prepared with plans for you family. If there is a quarantine do you have enough food and water or medication? Do you have cash on hand in case all banks are closed? Do you have a plan for your children if they go to school or daycare? This is much like writing out a plan for a hurricane. Sit down with your family and friends and figure out what you will do if there is no school and make sure that you have at least 2 weeks of food and drinking water on hand at all time. you may also like to make sure if you are on prescription that you have 2 weeks of that medication on hand at all time.
Third take an inventory of what you have and what you may need. I am not saying that you need to go out and buy a Hazmat suit for every member of your family. I am saying that you need to have the following:
- food for at least 14 days for each person in your family
- clean drinking water for 14 days for your family
- cold medicine
- pain relievers
- simple first aid kit
- a plan for if school, daycares, banks and other business are close.
- two week supply of all prescription drugs (most doctors will do this if you explain that you need them for your Emergency supply)
- a way to heat your home in case power goes out
(14 days is usually how long a quarantine can last. They could be longer. I suggest keeping at least 3 months of food, water, medicine, and other things on hand. But if you don't want to do that then at the bare minimum keep enough to keep you alive in time of a crisis)
Finally don't get scared because of all the crazy stuff you see on the news. do get concerned if the CDC shows up in your state and issues warning. Be courteous to others by practicing good hygiene and not limiting the spread of germs.
